Jonny's life is full of text based awesomeness!
Is it happening? Isn’t it happening? Has something happened? When will we know what happened? Can we donate to make it happen quicker? Will we know after it’s happened or will they tell us while it’s happening?
All tough questions, with one easy answer. Yes! It is happening, work on the Canon 500D Firmware hack is still in progress. . .but sadly, there hasn’t been much progress. . . *Queue sad face*
It was never going to be an easy road for Jonny Petts to crack the 500D open like a ripe walnut, exposing the oh so crunchy inner centre to his machinations. In fact I knew it was a rather ambitious project to be undertaking given Canon’s tightening of all things related to firmware. Considering that Trammell Hudson got his dirty little mits on the Canon 5DMKII and taught an already sexy piece of kit how to pole dance it’s no wonder. Surely Canon want to drip feed us easy to implement features in order to keep the profit centre close to home? Hey, if you were a multinational corporation with a plan, wouldn’t you do the same?! I know I would!
But it’s not all bad news, there are some really positive things that have happened in the last couple of months that may give you cause for hope.
Firstly here’s what Jonny had to say in our last communication. . .
I don’t want any donations for this yet, but the news is that I’m currently a bit stuck with some of the code. But luckily for me my uncle is a programmer for Store counting systems and he uses IDA extensively so he offered to provide assistance with the bits I don’t have a total grasp of. I am not on the level of Magic Lantern and I’m still learning as I’m doing all of this. I am also close to purchasing a Canon 550D so I can compare a lot of the things between them and find out what everything does!!
So as you can see, it’s not full steam ahead without any hiccups, but it was never going to be and the project is still very much alive and kicking. That Jonny is not willing to accept whatever cash people want to throw his way I think is quite decent also. So while there is still determination driving this thing, I think you’d be silly to count it as down and out.
Another very positive fact worth noting, is that the previously unknown to me, Tester 13, who is working on the project too, has well and truly earned his stripes. You may or may not have read about the firmware hack that gave the Panasonic GH1 it’s wings (Greatly increased bitrate amongst other things) and got many a shooter very excited, well, even if you haven’t the work was pretty bloody awesome! Rambo has been raving about it, he’ll pop up around here somewhere singing it’s praises (won’t ya?!
). Well that was the fine work of Tester 13. So there is some very good help on the case with Jonny.
So considering how long it too to see progress with the GH1, perhaps it will just take a little while to see this come to fruition. Don’t lose heart, friends. . .Stay the course. . .We will see in time!
More soon!

Thank you SOO much, and I apologize for thinking it was dead… =>.<= My bad!
Espero ansioso. No se desanimen. Confío!!
I look forward to. Do not be discouraged. I hope!
………..**POP** ……… hey, how did i get here???
Ohhhh the
GH1GH13… Yes what a different camera it is now, stable AVCHD from 9mbps to 48mbps in 1080p or 720p@50fps and plays back in-camera. Rather than rave about it like a madman, just watch this Music video about to appear on FOX TV shot and produced by Aussie Peter Corbett of Josh Rawiri’s new single, fully shot on the GH13. If you are a Vimeo member, download the 1080p file uploaded by Peter part way down on the right hand side under “”ABOUT THIS VIDEO”" http://vimeo.com/13542014Great news about Vitaliy (Tester 13) working with Jonny
Cheers Rambo
…….**POP**……….
POP…. one more thing, that video is footage straight out of the camera, no grading or Colour Correction done and was shot with Smooth Movie Mode settings all at default…..POP…..
Like I said in part one of the report:
“I’m planning on buying the 500D. I have experience in various assembly languages (z80, mips, x86) and programming languages (especially C). I’m willing to participate if I can be of any help!”
If he doesn’t accept financial contributions yet, maybe he accepts some code distribution or an extra pair of eyes to have a look at that dump? You can contact me on the email address I filled in here.
err, that should have read “code contribution“
Hey there magic lantern gets over the line 550D hack beta now available for testing!
Check out: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/550D
Ooops, sorry it is Pre-Alpha, no where near as stable as beta. Use at own risk. Sorry to 500 owners.
Just wanted to show my interest here aswell. Would be amazing if they can make this happen!
Correct me if I am wrong, but surely the fact that they have a pre-aplha distribution of a frimware hack/modification for the 550D means that they have to some extent cracked the encryption???
As far as I can gather, this is/was the major stumbling block for the 500D hack?
Good news anyway you look at it surely…
They may be over the encryption but that doesnt mean they have a road map.
Got my 550D yesterday, can’t wait to try ML on it. I have CHDK on my P&S and I love that! Zebra, histogram and full scripting for timelapse etc. its great.
Hello!
This would be absolutely great! Thank you so much in advance.
Cheers
Peter
Can’t wait to shoot 1080 like I should
Any news??
Hope ! Hope ! Hope !
We have LOTS of it !
Keep on doing the right thing… we love you guys fot this !
Any news? on this. Is it dead or still being worked on? Any update would be great, good or bad news.
Might be time to flick Jonny a message. . .
any news from johnny?
nothing yet?
Hope you make it, it would be really nice to get some manuel settings to the videofunction on my 500D. I am really looking around for some way to connect an external microphone too. With the possibility to add an extra microphone + manuel settings on videorecording this camera would become PERFECT!
Bless you my son in your precious work. Especially if you can get 24 fps at 1080p.
Thanks for all and good luck !
I send you my good vibes ;p
It’s exciting to know there is someone working on this!
Every time I come back here, with little hope, I see a new message and my hope returns.
Bought my 500D yesterday, and I was a little dissapointed on the lack of control in video-mode.
Thanks for taking time doing this! Hope to hear some news soon !!
I wrote in the first webpage. Just adding here that I too am an interested party. Good luck. I’m rooting for you guys.
Go for it!! Come on, you have all our support
Here is a dump for the 550D firmware, in case they haven’t got it yet: http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=10380&start=30 (in the top post of this page)
Yay!! Any news?
While this is not a help on a firmware upgrade on the T1i, I can give a couple of easy ways around the full manual control issue.
1) Using a lens adapter and pretty much any other lens, you first set the settings you want in the photo mode, then shift over to the video mode. The lens adapter does not allow the lens contacts to come into contact with the body contacts. Hence, manual control.
2) If you are using EF lenses, once again go to the photo mode and set whatever you want. Then, press the lens release button and slightly turn the lens about 1/8 inch. With the display on, you’ll see the F shift to F00. You have now disconnected the lens from the contacts. You are now in full manual mode again. Shift to video mode and rock and roll.
Both of these modes work great. I have an old 1979 Tamron Adaptall 2 that I use with the M42 adapter. It takes amazing shots.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the input.
With regard to point 2 however about twisting the lens, I used to use this fix on my 500D and worth noting is that you must also hold in the Depth of Field preview button to force the lens to the desired f-stop before twisting it to disconnect the contacts. Simply selecting it in photo mode is not accurate, there are large gaps between f-stop selections in the photo mode and using the Depth of Field preview button is the only way to ensure you are actually using the f-stop the camera is reporting.
Happy shooting!
Come on! We need some update! Please!
Hello,
I bought my first DSLR some days ago, the Canon EOS 500D. When I bought this camera I did not know about the new 550D model. Canon itself does not seem to be much interested in making updates for “old” EOS models. That is quite bad. I personally changed from Nikon cameras to Canon because Nikon also did not support their older products. The full HD video option of the EOS 500D is quite unuseable with 20 fps only. That is a shame. :-/
Imo
Hello,
I’ll be buying 500d soon so good luck to us and the hackerzzz!!
Oh, i would really like that. Can i donate anywhere now? How is the progress? I read somewhere that development of 500d lantern hack was stopped?
I guess this is dead?
Just tell us is it dead?
He once wrote that is he going to buy a new eos550 and I thing that when he bought eos 550, he doesn’t want to take care of our model no longer
:(
man, i hope this hack come true very soon. all my good vibes to johnny and the team behind this!
any chance of an update….good or bad….think its a great thing your doing….if it’s still being done….all my best
No news??? I’m going crazy… the stupid 30 and 20 fps format is hateful!!!! I’ve to convert all movie before to use final cut
Hello.
I’m a filmaker, and i love doing good quality videos.
I thought that the 500D would have been the best choise, but i didn’t know that the camera didn’t have the manual controls for video options.
Please, please, please do this update(if you can obviously)…
I was really dumb at buying the 500D…i admit it, and i would really like to have more control in the video mode.
I think that this would also be helpful for others.
P.S. Any news?
@ magnas: I am working with final cut too, but I have no problems working with final cut at the 20 fps or 30 fps videos.
Still nothing? any news at all?
Sorry to read, it does not look like you can pull this stunt off?
IF you do, I think there are quite some money to make on it.. IF all the persons who want it, paid 10$ there should be a litle more, than just to a movie ticket
Nobody does anything in this directions so I have given up and since couple of days I liked my camera
See:http://www.highdefedition.com/2010/11/canon-500d-firmware-hack-the-end/, sorry to say but its no more
See:http://www.highdefedition.com/2010/11/canon-500d-firmware-hack-the-end/, Johnny (the one working on the hack) found it too hard to continue and had to stop as working on it by himself and the project ended, sorry for everyone who stil wants this, it won’t be him doing it, so not sure if it will happen now at all.
Just look at this link?
http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/500D#Installation
Magic Lantern is rapidly enhancing, many features already work. I am testing it since a few days and I am excited what it does with my 500D
I bought the T1i knowing it would shoot 20 fps. in fact, i don’t mind at all the way it looks while shooting at 20 fps. It requires a longer progress in post, but that’s not an issue to me either. It’s part of the workflow. Remember, it’s cheaper than the T2i.
What I need is to know if there is a hack that allows any kind of video output while shooting. The idea is to connect the camera to a wireless transmitter and monitor what is shooting, remotely. Any suggestions?!?!
Thanks you!!!
