Sunshine Coast Love

Here’s a video I cut recently for a client. It’s all shot here on the Sunshine Coast with a variety of camera’s.

All the slow motion footage was shot with a Panasonic HVX and a Sony EX1. Both nice camera’s, but more on that another time.

As the title would suggest, a good portion of the landscape footage came from a little Canon 500D (the T1i in strange countries) the revolutionary Canon 5D MKII’s baby brother. I would love to get my hands on one of those, but I’m waiting to see what develops. It sure is an exciting time. I used a couple of different lenses, none really amazing quality and not a speck of L series glass to be seen. The 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS Kit lens, an old 75-300mm f3.5-5.6 and a Tokina 11-16 f2.8.

I also used a Nikon D90 for some shots. With a Tamron 11-18 f4.5-something and a Nikon VR 300mm. Not exactly sure what those lens specs were as it wasn’t my kit. I can find out if you really want to know though.

The surfing footage is definitely not something you see everyday here on the Sunshine Coast. I shot that when Cyclone Hamish was sitting off the coast just north of us, sending out stupidly sized swells. People travelled from all over Australia to surf Queensland breaks for those couple of days and all up and down the coast talk was rife with stories of monster sets pounding normally docile local breaks. It’s pity it wasn’t sunny, but in between the rain and also during it, from underneath a large plastic bag I managed to get quite a lot of footage. A very small portion of which is in this clip.

I always planned to do a clip of just this footage, but so far haven’t got around to it.

That almost made me want to leave my chilly state and come visit you guys.

  • Super Cool video! I love the shots of the little kid fighting with the water :) I am looking into getting the 500D, I currently have the 450D which I love, but I’d like to have the video taking capability. I use it mostly as a hobby and for shooting wakeboarding pics of me and my friends. I’d like to know if it’s going to be good for shooting wakeboarding videos as well. Did you shoot the wakeboarding parts of this video with the 500D?

      Hey Cristina,

Thanks for the feedback! :) The 500D is a great little camera, however if you can afford the extra dosh and want to shoot wakeboarding, I would be looking at the upcoming 7D that I have been rambling on about here for ages. Wakeboarding looks awesome at 60 frames a second! :) mmmm Slo mo!

The wakeboarding shots in the Sunny Coast video were shot on my dedicated video camera, the Panasonic HVX-202. I have only shot a little bit of wakeboarding stuff with my 500D, but I must say that when you’re trying to achieve that shallow depth of field, focus is critical and very difficult to achieve when shooting run’n'gun. Once I get the 7D I will definitely be setting up a dedicated shoot to put it through it’s paces, I’ll keep you posted on that one.
